Only 165 NRIs on poll rolls
CHANDIGARH: The president of the North American Punjabi Association (NAPA),Satman Singh Chahal on Thursday claimed that only 165 Non Resident Indians (NRIs) had enrolled as voters in the state for the forthcoming Assembly polls,of which 12 had registered in Jalandhar district. Addressing a press conference here,Chahal said: A less number of NRIs have enrolled as voters because the procedure has not been properly published by authorities here and is very lengthy. Besides they have to come back to India to vote in the elections. There should be a procedure by which they can cast their ballot in the embassy concerned or through postal ballot like in case of defence personnel.
VAT slashed for state power corps
CHANDIGARH: Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on Thursday gave his nod to slash the Value Added Tax (VAT) from 12 per cent to 5 per cent on material or equipment purchased for power generation,transmission and distribution by the Punjab State Power Corporation and the Punjab State Transmission Corporation. A government spokesperson said the chief minister had taken the decision to safeguard the interests of the local industry. It would not only boost the financial viability of these corporations but also immensely benefit all categories of consumers across the state by ensuring far better efficiency in the system of power generation,transmission and distribution,the spokesperson added.
Scribe Bishambhar Sood is dead
SHIMLA: Veteran journalist and editor of the Parvat Kee Goonj,Bishambhar Lal Sood (71) died here early on Thursday morning after suffering a cardiac arrest. He is survived by his wife and four children. The cremation took place later in the day at Kanlog crematorium where a large number of people,media professionals and government officials joined the funeral procession. Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal in a condolence message said Sood was a seasoned journalist and a great social worker. The Himachal Journalist Forum expressed deep grief over the sad demise of Sood. Sood was a senior journalist and writer in his own style. He was known for his straight humour and holy commitments,said Yogender Kanwar ,president of the forum
BJP suspends two office-bearers
SHIMLA: In another attempt to crack the whip on party rebels,state BJP president Khimi Ram has suspended two office bearers Navin Dhiman,a former MLA and Tikku Thakur,a district BJP general secretary at Shimla. Dhiman was also the states party unit secretary. Both had joined the Bharshtachar Mukti Morcha formed by the former state BJP president Maheshwar Singh . Both the party men have been working against the BJPs interests. They should decide if they wanted to stay with Morcha or the BJP organisation, Khimi Ram said.
Indian Overseas Cong demands ticket
CHANDIGARH: The Indian Overseas Congress (IOC) has forwarded the name its president Vikramjit Bajwa to PPCC president Captain Amarinder Singh as party candidate from Amritsar Central. In the last five years,he has taken up issues like Air India Kanishka compensation,voting rights,NRIs in Punjab,besides delay in visa and passport issuance. The IOC has been entrusted to garner NRI support for the party and it plans to bring 1,000 NRIs from US,Canada,UK and Australia to campaign for Congress candidates in Punjab on February 1,2012, its joint secretary said on Thursday.
