Briefly State: DSGMC wants UPA to name Sharad Yadav as vice-president candidate

Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee on Monday urged the UPA to name Janta Dal chief Sharad Yadav as vice-presidential candidate.

Amritsar: Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) on Monday urged the UPA to name Janta Dal (United) chief Sharad Yadav as vice-presidential candidate. “I appeal to the Congress high command and UPA ally parties to name Yadav as their candidate for Vice President,” DSGMC president Paramjit Singh Sarna said in a statement. Sarna said that Yadav had a clean and secular image.

Sewer work damages retired JE’s house

JALANDHAR: The house of a junior engineer who retired from Punjab Electricity Department got damaged as heavy earth moving machines employed by sewerage board dug up earth to lay sewerage pipes at Nagal Shama village. “We have filed a complaint with the sewer board and the Jalandhar deputy commissioner,” Indu Sharma,wife of the retired JE,Tejinder Pal Sharma,said. Sewerage Board executive engineer Resham Lal,admitted that house was damaged and said they will get it repaired.

Task group on health and medical education

Chandigarh: The Punjab government on Monday constituted a task group on Health and Medical Education under the chairmanship of Chairman,Medical Council of India,Dr K K Talwar. A decision to this effect was taken in a meeting of Punjab Governance Reforms Commission,held here. The task group would lay down standards for availability of human resource,medicines as well as infrastructure in the public health facilities at various levels. The group also decided to examine the provisions of the Clinical Establishments (Registration and Regulation) Act,2010 with a view to developing a model for regulating private healthcare without bringing in ‘Inspector Raj’ in the state.

PAMB chairman granted extension

CHANDIGARH: Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on Monday granted extension to the chairman of Punjab Agriculture Marketing Board,Ajmer Singh Lakhowal,for another term of three years. Lakhowal’s present term as chairman ended on June 17.

Medicos strike enters third day three

Ludhiana: The Guru Gobind Singh Medical College and Hospital,Faridkot,interns on Monday submitted a memorandum of demands to the deputy commissioner even as their strike entered the third day. Dr Arvind Bansal,head,Forum for Welfare of Interns,said,“If government does not accept our demands by June 30,we will intensify our stir.” The interns are demanding a hike in their stipend from the current Rs 4,500 per month to Rs 13,000-15000 per month.

Chief secy to approve tour plans via e mail

CHANDIGARH: The Punjab government on Monday issued instructions to all financial commissioners,principal secretaries and administrative secretaries to get their tour programmes approved from chief secretary through e mail. A spokesman said that approval would be conveyed through e-mail and those seeking travelling allowance would have to attach a copy of the approved tour programme.

BJP’s Jail Bharo Andolan on June 22

CHANDIGARH: The Punjab unit of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would stage dharnas and court arrests on June 22 at all 22 district headquarters as part of party’s Jail Bharo Andolan on the issue of steep hike in fuel prices. State BJP president,Ashwani Sharma,said the Rs 7.50 per liter hike in petrol price has led to financial anarchy in the country. “It has accelerated the vicious circle of price rise. The devalued rupee (compared to US dollar) is adding oil to the fire,” he said,adding BJP would lead the agitation with the slogan “Petrol ki keemat wapis lo,yaa phir jail do.”

Undetrial escapes,4 cops booked

AMRITSAR: Four policemen,including a ASI,was booked after an undertrial escaped from police custody when he was brought from the Amritsar Central Jail on production of warrant in an attempt to murder case. A case has been registered against Pul Taran Wala police post incharge Amarjit Kumar,Head Constable Hardev Singh and Home Guard Lakhwinder Singh after undertrial Ravipreet Singh escaped from Pul Taran Wala police post. The policemen are absconding.

BSc (agriculture): Girls outperform boys

AMRITSAR: Girls have yet again outperformed the boys. This time,in the field considered mainly as the male domain. Girls have bagged six top positions in the entrance test for BSc in Agriculture conducted by Khalsa College Amritsar. Saying that never in history of the 120-year-old college,had girls done so well in this particular entrance test,Principal Dr Daljit Singh said: “It is a surprise to us as well. It reflects the changing social paradigms where girls are making in-roads in all fields earlier considered to be boys’ domains.”

While Jaspreet Kaur has bagged the first and Simrat Khurana the second position,the third position has gone to Pooja Salaria,followed by Sandeep Kaur,Harwinder Kaur and Manpreet Kaur.
