A CBI special court on Tuesday accepted a closure report in a bribery case,in which, four people, including three employees of the State Transport Authority (STA),had been charged with demanding and accepting money from a local transporter.

In October 2001,CBI sleuths had arrested Motor Vehicle Inspector (MVI),Surat Singh, clerk Arvinder Kumar,Suraj Bhan,a helper in the STA secretary’s office and an alleged tout,Sukhdev Singh after the owner of Chaddha Transport,Varinder Singh accused them of harassing him time and again by impounding or challaning his buses.

Varinder further alleged that the accused had wrongly penalised a bus that belonged to him and had confiscated his driving licence. The accused reportedly told him that he could have the licence back only after he paid a small amount, failing which, his buses would not be allowed to operate in the city.

The owner of Chaddha Transport further alleged that as he was unable to pay the amount demanded by the STA officials,he could not retrieve his licence. Varinder said he had approached the officials time and again, seeking his licence, but was refused.

Varinder had complained to the CBI that the accused had demanded Rs 2,000 from him following which a trap was laid and all the accused were allegedly caught red-handed while accepting the bribe. They were booked under various sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

The CBI had initially filed a closure report in 2005 but it was not accepted and fresh investigations were ordered. Another closure report was filed in 2008 but it met the same fate. Finally on Tuesday, the court accepted the closure report after hearing arguments.
