Women power
The corridors of power in Punjab need to be guarded like the Tower of London, which got its first woman protectors of the Crown Jewels in 2007. She became the first female Yeoman Warder since the corps of Tower Guards was created in 1485. Four years later, the Punjab Civil Secretariat has also got women protectors for the first time. Interestingly, the deployment of armed women constables of CISF has been surprising the officers, who are not used to the courteous ways of security checks. They very politely stop a person and ask for the identification card. Earlier, women constables were deployed only to search women visitors.
During the brief Haryana Assembly session,Speaker Kuldeep Sharma had to give a moral science lesson to the members, who were out to create ruckus. On several occasions,he had to request them to put up their best behaviour for the sake of over 100 students who had come to witness the proceedings of the House. What impression of you will they carry back with them? They will think this is how proceedings happen in assemblies everywhere, he said.
In hope of dope test
In the Haryana House,Congress MLA Naresh Sharma wanted a dope test to be conducted on BJPs Anil Vij,when he continued to raise slogans in support of Anna Hazare for over half-an-hour during the Question Hour. Vijs face was flushed and despite the exhaustion,he continued to raise slogans and moved in the well of the House with a small replica of the Tricolour. It seems Vij needs to be tested for what he has eaten today, said Sharma. Meanwhile, known for his interest in Urdu poetry,Speaker Kuldeep Sharma could not resist correcting Vij when he tried to make a point by quoting an Urdu couplet. I will not allow a poem to be abused, he said and quoted the entire poem with a flourish.
Echoes of Lokpal Bill
The Anna Hazare movement was flavour of the week in Haryana. Having passed the controversial amendment to the Ceiling on Land Holdings Act,the government was at pains this week to justify the move. Faced with allegations that the Act had been amended to benefit private builders,Parliamentary Affairs Minister Randeep Singh Surjewala held a press conference where he tried to dodge several uncomfortable questions. A visibly exhausted Surjewala said at the end of the conference: Even the authors of the Lokpal Bill would not have been grilled this much in Parliament as you all have grilled me today.
Majithia,the hero
So,SAD MLA Bikramjit Singh Majithia has a new portfolio cause fissures in rival organisations and amalgamate splinters in the Akali Dal. When Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal was asked what would he reward Majithia with for getting leaders from the Panthic Morcha and SAD (Amritsar) to the Akali Dal for the upcoming SGPC elections,he said: This was his duty,so why should he be rewarded? The MLA simply blushed on the CMs remark. Must be feeling proud for his deft luring skills.
