Mohali Deputy Commissioner (DC), Aashika Jain, on Saturday asked officers to strive to prevent a spike in dengue cases in the district.

The DC informed that as many as 41 cases of dengue have already been reported this month, out of which 33 cases surfaced from urban areas, with the remaining coming from rural areas.

Stressing on the need for exercising caution for the next month as well, the DC said that this was the right time to hit back hard and eradicate the dengue mosquito larvae with the help of larvicidal action, fumigation, fogging, and educating the residents about draining out/flushing out the stagnant water in their flower pots, trays of refrigerators.

Directing the ADCs, SDMs, EOs, BDPOs and SMOs to go out on every Friday to perform dry day activities by sensitising the people about dengue and ways to prevent the disease, Jain said that the number of cases of the vector-borne disease that had surfaced so far was alarming and there was a need expedite awareness and prevention measures on the field.

Giving a breakup of cases in urban pockets, Jain said that Kharar had seen 17 cases to top the list, followed by Mohali with 11 cases.’

Teh DC added that Zirakpur was third on the list with three cases, while two cases had been reported from Dera Bassi. In the rural belt, Gharuan had six cases while Boothgarh and Golumajra had one case each.

Jain urged the residents, particularly those in the urban pockets, to make it a routine to drain out/flush the stagnant water from coolers, trays of refrigerators and flower pots, every Friday, which she said can be observed as Dry Day. She also said that residents should take initiative and sensitise their neighbours as well about dengue and its prevention.
