Union Home Minister P Chidambaram today told the Haryana officials to start a helpline 1090 under the ‘eyes and ears scheme’ started by states like Kerala,so that people can give information to the police about the movement of suspicious elements in their locality. The identities of the informers would be kept secret.

Holding a review meeting on internal security with officials of Haryana government ahead of the Lok Sabha elections next month,Chidambaram asked the officials to take full security measures in the light of the threat from external sources.

Haryana had earlier sought Rs 200 crore for modernisation of its police force,official sources said. They added that the meeting was a follow up of the earlier meeting on internal security,which the Chief Ministers had in Delhi.

Chidambaram’s meeting with the Haryana officials at the Civil Secretariat was attended by Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda,Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister M L Tayal,Chief Secretary Dharamvir and Home Secretary Krishan Mohan.

Journalists were not allowed near the venue of the meeting and there was no media-interaction either. The meeting began at 9 am and lasted for over 90 minutes,said Krishan Mohan. Chidambaram suggested arming police with modern weapons,communication devices and intelligence inputs.

The Union Minister laid stress on the fact that the lathi-wielding police now needs to be equipped with modern weapons to deal with all kinds of threat,especially terror threats,official sources said. Highlighting the importance of intelligence,the Home Minister laid the stress on mobility,visibility and firepower. He also spoke about the importance of training,use of technology and equipping the Station House Officers (SHOs) with communication devices.
