As the cold wave again tightened its grip over Himachal Pradesh and the meteorological department predicted heavy snow in the coming days,the Shimla Deputy Commissioner on Saturday ordered closure of all private and government schools from February 6 to 11.
However,the schools would reopen on February 13 only,as February 12 would be a Sunday,officials said.
On Saturday,Shimla was cloudy throughout the day and recorded a minimum temperature of 4.6 degrees Celsius,a fall by 0.9 degree Celsius from Friday. The high hills in Lahaul and Spiti,Kinnaur,Kullu and Chamba districts have been experiencing light to moderate snowfall since Friday, said a weather department official.
Keylong in Lahaul and Spiti district was the coldest place in the state where mercury plummeted to 7 degrees Celsius below the freezing point. The town recorded 3 cm of snowfall.
Kalpa in Kinnaur district,which recorded 6.3 cm of snow,saw a low of minus 1.2 degrees Celsius while it was 0.6 degrees Celsius in Manali and 4.7 degrees Celsius in Dharamsala.
Mercury rises in Punjab,Haryana
Chandigarh: People on Saturday got some respite from cold in Punjab and Haryana,with mercury rising a few notches above normal in the region amid cloudy weather conditions.
Narnaul in Haryana recorded the lowest temperature in the region at minimum 8.5 degrees Celsius,four notches above normal,the Met Department said here.
In Punjab,Amritsar saw mercury settling at 9.6 degrees C,up by five notches above normal,while Patiala and Ludhiana recorded minimum temperatures of 9.5 degrees C and 10.4 degrees C respectively. The weather in Punjab remained mainly dry.
Chandigarh recorded a low of 10.6 degrees C,up by four notches above normal.
Minimum temperature reached double digit mark in Haryanas Hisar,Rohtak and Bhiwani at 10.7 degrees C,10.1 degrees C and 10 degrees C respectively. Karnal and Ambala recorded minimum of 8.6 degrees C and 9.2 degrees C,up by two notches above normal.
Maximum temperature also witnessed upward movement as several areas in Punjab and Haryana saw the mercury crossing the 20 degrees C mark.
