To tackle increasing traffic jams on the city roads,the Chandigarh Police have formulated a plan to reduce the congestion,especially at the city roundabouts.
After conducting a thorough study of road congestions,around 20 such roundabouts or intersections have been identified,where the police and the UT Administrations road engineering wing shall introduce changes in the coming days. As part of the immediate required strategy,the diameter of selected roundabouts will be increased and slip roads be constructed at major road intersections. In this regard,a slip road is already under construction at the Transport lightpoint (from Panchkula to Chandigarh side),which is likely to be opened for traffic by next week.
As part of the study,the Chandigarh Police have studied the most congested and accident prone points in the city. From January to April,149 accidents has taken place in the city 41 of these were fatal.
At various points,we will increase the diameter of the roundabouts. Also,the area around the roundabouts and intersections shall be increased. Slip roads are being constructed on major roads,which will definitely help in reducing traffic congestion, said an officer.
A number of traffic police personnel have also been deployed at various points to control congestions during rush hours. Chandigarh DIG Alok Kumar said: We have identified the traffic congestion points and we,along with the road engineering department,will take steps to get rid of the problem.
