Cong questions SAD opposition to FDI in retail after introducing it in Punjab

Congress leader from Patti and PCC secretary Harminder Singh Gill on Friday questioned the SAD’s motive behind opposing Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in multi-brand retail, and said FDI was already introduced in Punjab in different forms.

Congress leader from Patti and PCC secretary Harminder Singh Gill on Friday questioned the SAD’s motive behind opposing Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in multi-brand retail, and said FDI was already introduced in Punjab in different forms.

Stating that the SAD was following the BJP blindly on the issue of FDI,Gill said Punjab already had Best Price stores under Walmart in Amritsar,Jalandhar and Ludhiana. “Similarly,McDonalds,KFC and share of Lakshmi Niwas Mittal in Bathinda Refinery also come under FDI,” Gill said, adding that upcoming thermal plants at Banawala in Mansa,Goindwal Sahib and Rajpura were also being set up with the FDI money.

Calling BJP a “party of traders who fill their pockets by looting the farmers of Punjab,” Gill said,“Akali Jathedars do not even know the meaning of FDI”.

Urging the Congress-led UPA government to open a mega store at Majha with FDI,Gill said he would ensure that people of Patti extend support.

SAD spokesperson Daljit Singh Cheema said,“The UPA is issuing notification for FDI,now. If FDI was introduced in Punjab, earlier,as is being claimed by Gill, then the Congress-led UPA government is answerable,” Cheema said.
