Congress MLA Mamman Khan.Accusing the Haryana government of turning a blind eye to the region, Congress MLA Mamman Khan said on Thursday that a trauma case centre existed in all other districts of the state, but not in Mewat, adding that one such centre would have saved a few of the 2,296 lives lost to road accidents since 2013.
During the Question Hour of the ongoing budget session of the Assembly, the Ferozepur Jhirka MLA asked whether there was any proposal to open a trauma care centre in the civil hospital of Mandikhera in Nuh district.
As Health Minister Arti Singh Rao said there was no such proposal under consideration, an infuriated Khan said, “Since 2013 until March 2025, a total of 4,800 accidents have occurred in this area, resulting in 2,296 deaths. When a person gets injured in a road accident—be it Ramesh, Ranjit, Rahim or Abdul—they are taken to the hospital in Mandikhera and are referred to either Rohtak, Delhi or Jaipur. Had there been a trauma centre, we could have saved a few of these lives.”
Speaker Harvinder Kalyan interrupted Khan, saying, “You are trying to take the discussion in some other direction.”
Khan continued his criticism of the government. “There are 22 districts in Haryana, and trauma centres exist in 21 districts. Why is Mewat the only district without a trauma centre? Why does Mewat not receive any four-lane roads, trauma centres or universities?”
In response to Khan’s assertions, Arti Singh Rao said, “There is a trauma centre in Nalhar and in the Nuh CHC, both of which are 25 km away from Mandikhera. There is also a trauma centre in the Palwal CHC, which is 45 km away from Mandikhera, and another trauma centre located 55 km away. According to the norms, one trauma centre is sufficient within a 60-km radius, and there are four within the 60-km radius of Mandikhera.”
Despite Khan’s persistent objections to her reply, Rao added, “Mandikhera had a demand for a hospital. The chief minister announced in July 2024 that it would make it a 200-bed hospital. The process is underway. The Government of India has also released a grant for trauma centres, out of which Rs 17 crore has been allocated to Mandikhera. The hospital here also has trauma facilities that are being upgraded. We are going to have five advanced life-support ambulances, and the physical infrastructure in the hospital is being enhanced, with new modular operation theatres to be established.”
