Union I&B Minister Anurag Thakur in Hamirpur, Saturday. (Express Photo)Union Minister Anurag Thakur Saturday claimed that the “hands of foreign powers” are visible in the manifesto of the Congress party, which “wants to give property of your children to the Muslims”, sparking a sharp reaction from the Opposition party, which lodged a complaint with the Election Commission alleging that the “outrageous” remarks violated the MCC.
Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said that the party has sought “immediate and meaningful” action against the Union I&B Minister, failing which they will “name and shame the offenders”.
“Today, Anurag Thakur followed in the footsteps of the PM and the UP Chief Minister and made a most outrageous speech that violates all standards of decency and truth, apart from the EC’s Model Code of Conduct itself. @INCIndia has written to the ECI to take note of the speech and issue a notice immediately. The ECI must realise that a lack of meaningful action emboldens these bad faith actions. And if they do not take action then we will name and shame these offenders who think they are above the law, both in the arena of the public as well as before the courts,” Ramesh said on X.
Earlier in the day, Thakur, addressing a poll rally in Hamirpur, from where he is seeking re-election, accused the Congress of working with a foreign hand to give people’s property to Muslims instead of their children.
“In its manifesto, along with the hand of the Congress, hands of foreign forces are also visible who want to give your children’s property to Muslims, finish the nation’s nuclear arsenal, and divide the country in the name of caste and region,” Thakur said.
He said the ‘tukde tukde’ gang has completely taken over the Congress and its ideology and “you have to decide on whether to support the ‘tukde tukde’ gang or stand with Narendra Modi who believes in ‘Ek Bharat Shreshta Bharat’ ”.
“It is for you to decide whether your property should go to your children or to the Muslims. We have given equal rights to the Muslims… from toilets, to houses to gas cylinders to foodgrains but not in the name of religion. We gave it because it was their right,” he said.
Attacking Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Thakur said, “I want to tell Rahul Gandhi…when Rajiv Gandhi became the PM, there was a law that after her death, 55% of former PM Indira Gandhi’s property would go to government treasury. But Rajiv Gandhi changed the law to save his property. Now, Rahul Gandhi did not get married and wants to take away your children’s property. Gandhi family does whatever suits them”. With PTI inputs
