A Panchkula police team shot down two in an encounter in Sriganganagar district on Thursday night. Sukhwant Singh,who was the leader of the gang,along with Viru and Jaggi,hired an Indica from Kalka and robbed the driver at at gunpoint the Morni-T point on March 1. A case was registered at the Chandimandir Police Station.

A team of three inspectors — Chandimandir police station SHO Inspector Jangsher Singh,Sector 14 police station SHO Inspector Aman Kumar and CIA Inspector Karmveer Singh was formed to locate them. Following a trail of phone calls,the accused were located near the Rajasthan border. The Panchkula police team fired at them near a liquor vend in a market in Raisinghnagar Tehsil of Sriganganagar district but they escaped in an Innova.

The wheel of their car got trapped subsequently. In an encounter which ensued,Viru and Jaggi were killed. Sukhwant Singh was hit in the shoulder and arrested.

They had looted the Innova at gunpoint from Abohar (Punjab) along with Rs 4 lakh. Before that they had snatched a car at gunpoint in Fatehabad. SP Maneesh Chaudhry said, “17-18 cases related to murder,attempt to murder and robbery are registered against them in Punjab. They were convicted in a murder case in Ludhiana and were lodged in jail,but fled.”

He added,“Our team is doing investigations in Rajasthan and is expected to reach Panchkula on March 26. More people are expected to be arrested in the case.”
