Cops will act only as per law: new Punjab DGP

The newly appointed Punjab Director General Police (DGP), Suresh Arora, on Wednesday evaded queries on the recent Sarbat Khalsa, the Congress allegations of phone tapping and the ‘Khalistan’ during his maiden visit to Doaba.

He, however, said that from now, Punjab Police officials will act as per the law after a question was posed to him about alleged interference in police functioning by SAD ‘halka incharges’, a term used for local SAD bosses in Punjab.

“During my interaction with my officials I have instructed them to work as per the law and nothing beyond that,” the DGP said I response to the question. “If any police injustice is highlighted by the media, I will take action,” Arora told the media at the Punjab Armed Police (PAP) complex on Wednesday.

As for reforms, the DGP said he wants to strengthen police stations across the state, for which, more recruitment would be done soon. On Tuesday, he had said that there were around 5,000 vacant posts in the department.

Questioned on the allegations that the Congress backed the ‘Sarbat Khalsa’ and on whether police had found any substance to the charges, Arora said that the matter was under investigation and that hence he could not comment. On Congress leaders alleging that their phones were being tapped, he refused to comment.
