Ludhiana-based controversial doctor,Dr Sumit Sofat, who was arrested by the police on Friday from Sector 22,Chandigarh,was produced in a local court on Saturday, which sent him to three days police remand. The accused has been booked in an attempt to murder case that dates back to July 2009 and also for lodging a false complaint. He will be in custody till September 21. Sofat was produced in the court of Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Raj Gupta.
Police sources informed that another accused,Dr. Ravinder, who was an ally of the doctor in his criminal activities, was also arrested late last night from Bathinda. Interrogation of the accused revealed that Ravinder had demanded around 10 per cent of the total market value of the land on Ferozepur Road, which was the main bone of contention between Sofat and the Pashans against whom Sofat had filed a false complaint in July 2009. The two had been fighting over a 1,200-square yard plot.
In July 2009,Sofat had claimed that Ludhiana resident Ramesh Pashan, along with his sons,Vinayak and Abhinav, had attacked him and robbed him of Rs 33 lakh near Morni Hills. Sofat had also allegedly shot at his driver,Nelson,to substantiate his claims and later accused the Pashans of being involved in the act. During investigation,it was found that Sofat had many civil and criminal cases registered against him, including that of attempt to rape at Dehradun and forgery. Pashans,in their defence, had produced a video recording that showed Vinayak present at a social function at the time of the incident.
