Yet to make a concrete breakthrough in the sensational murder of DSP Balraj Singh Gill and a woman,Monica Kapila, the Punjab Police is set to assign the case to a new group of officials.

With the model code of conduct barring the regular transfer of officials, the authorities would seek permission from the Election Commission of India to bring in the police officials – most of them of Inspector rank – to crack the case. Some of these officials have even attended meetings related to the murder case.

ADGP(Crime),H S Dhillon,confirmed as much but added,“We

are contemplating bringing in some officers who have served in the district and know about the area where the crime was committed. However, the plan is just at the thought level.”

Meanwhile, the district police officials, investigating the case, are yet to reach a conclusion. DCP Ashish Choudhry today said that the police have questioned some more number plate makers and painters.

Interestingly, calls claiming clues to the case and false alarms have become another headache for the police. “We are reviving a number of calls – many a times calls are made to to settle personal issues,” Choudhry added.

Sources said that the policemen are also scanning the legal cases where Gill could have been of the key witnesses. “Till now we have not come across any such case where Gill’s statement in court could have made a huge difference,” Choudhry added.

The police officials, meanwhile, are concentrating on the drug addicts who visit the area where the crime took place. A senior official who has served the district in the past said,“The Haibowal area is known for smack addicts. A couple of years ago we had three murders reported from this area. The accused, when caught, were found high on drugs.”
