From now on,even station house officers (SHOs) will challan traffic offenders. The traffic police on Tuesday decided to provide alcosensors to all the SHOs of the city. In addition to traffic police,SHOs and other police officials will also challan drunk drivers with the help of alcosensors. One of the objective is to keep a check on police personnel who are drunk on duty. Maneesh Chaudhary,Superintendent of Chandigarh Traffic Police said,In a way we have multiplied our force. Every time either the traffic police vehicle was sent to the spot to do the needful or the accused was taken to a hospital for blood or urine test, which is time consuming. But now the SHOs will be equipped with alcosensors and the job will become much easier. Besides, this is a very efficient tool to keep a check on the police officials who are drunk during their working hours. Vijay Kumar,Deputy Superintendent of Traffic Police said,Many a times we have received requests from SHOs of various police stations to keep a check on brawls in their respective areas, especially near taverns and other places. Accepting their request,we have planned to provide them alcosensor. Traffic police will continue its existing efforts to keep a check on drunken driving. In this regard, the traffic police will also train the SHOs and atleast 10 employees of each police station to handle the alcosensors. Till now, taking stringent action against drunken driving, the traffic police have booked around 2,553 offenders till July 2.
