Three INIFD students will display their lines at the Lakme Fashion Week

Amidst the plethora of freshers, hoping to make a cut in the eccentric world of Indian fashion, only a few actually manage a shot at the limelight. Three students from the International Institute of Fashion Design (INIFD) in the city have been selected to display their designs at the Gennext show in Lakme Fashion Week, summer resort 2010,scheduled to take off in Mumbai, later this month. Sabah Khan and duo Sukhwant and Aastha made the cut amongst students from over 100 centres of INIFD. The theme for Sabah’s collection is No Class, and has been inspired by the slums of Dharavi. “People in slums use patches on their clothes. It often results in inter-mingling of bright colors. There’s a certain contentment to their lives despite the poverty. I have tried to capture that essence through my designs” says Khan, who is also a stylist.

From digital prints to patch works, from fusing colours as diverse as bright greens and purples with dull browns,Khan’s collection uses friendly fabrics like linens and cottons to a chic end.

On the other hand, student duo Sukhwant and Aastha have worked around the theme of Auction of Humanity. The two have played up concepts like slavery, particularly in Africa, through silhouettes with fitted waistlines, bandage sleeves and detailing, including gathers and belts. The palette is harsh—greys, and blacks dominate it,with a hint of beige for relief.
