The area was under a flood scare on Tuesday morning after Bahona drain near the Moga city started to overflow. Water from the drain entered the nearby fields. Residents and district administration sprung into action and had to break a part of the road to ensure that the water in the drain continued its normal course.

Moga and its adjoining areas have not received much rainfall till now except a two-and-half hour shower on Monday. The resident of the city were, however, shocked to see the drain overflowing and eyewitnesses said that small breaches began to appear on the banks of the drain, especially in places where people had dug out sand. They said the drain had been choked and almost closed at some places due to the encroachments. At places, connecting roads had been built right across the drain. Moga DC Dr Satwant Singh Johal said,“The situation is under control and we were able to ensure smooth flow of water by afternoon. There is no report of any kind of loss.” “We have not only started cleaning this drain but have also initiated cleaning process of Bhuttar and Badni Kalan drains,” he added.

SDO (Drainage) Jasveer Singh said,“These are small drains that can handle only 70 cuesecs of water. We had water coming from somewhere near Jagraon but the situation was brought under control. We have removed the filth from this drain by using JCB machines and pipes too have been cleared.”
