The Court of Special CBI Judge,Ritu Tagore, today awarded rigorous imprisonment of 18 months to a clerk with Government Medical College and Hospital Sector 32 (GMCH-32) after holding him guilty in a case of corruption. The convict,Mohan Singh, was caught red handed while demanding a bribe of Rs 5,000 for changing a medical report when he was arrested by CBI.
The Court has also imposed a penalty of Rs 5,000 on Mohan Singh. The CBI had registered a case in February 2009 against junior assistant Mohan Singh posted with the surgery wing of GMCH-32.
He had demanded a bribe from the complainant,Varinder Bansal,of Mohali. According to the prosecution,Mohan was demanding the bribe to give a favourable medico-legal certificate to the complainant, who was accused in a case of causing injuries to another person in Mohali.
Mohan had changed the nature of injuries from being dangerous to life,to grievous hurt in the report. The CBI had also claimed said that that during his initial questioning Mohan had named a medical officer,on whose directions he was accepting money.
However, the CBI officials added that the clerk, who was posted in the dispatch wing, did not make any reference of the MO in his conversation recordings with the complainant. The complainant in the case had taken a U-turn from his deposition and submitted that there was a doctor posted with the surgery department who had demanded the bribe through Mohan Singh.
The Court, however, ruled that the CBI had sufficient evidence to nail the accused.
