Govt schools to get own bus service

The Education department and State Transport Authority finally seem to have woken up to the needs of students by floating a proposal to provide transport facility in government schools.

The Education department and State Transport Authority (STA) finally seem to have woken up to the needs of students by floating a proposal to provide transport facility in government schools.

A month ago,STA had asked government schools to provide data regarding students who would like to avail the school bus service. Keeping in view the number of students from each school and the routes to ply on,it has been decided to hire buses accordingly. The STA will implement the programme through the Education department.

“Every school has around 300-500 students who want the school bus service to start. We hope to begin plying the buses before mid-session. We are working on finalising the details. A meeting of school principals will also be called shortly,” said Director Public Instructions (Schools) Samwartak Singh.

With no transport being provided by the Administration, parents saw a harrowing time in April this year when autodrivers went on strike. While private schools managed since they have their own bus service, government students were the worst hit. With the proposal underway, parents too have expressed happiness at the turn of events.

“Commuting is a problem for my son as he either has to use the local bus or I have to drop him. It will be a relief for parents as well as students if the bus service is started,” said Sanjay Gulati,a parent.

“This facility was long overdue. I am glad that the Administration has finally realised the harassment and inconvenience parents and their wards undergo in the absence of school buses,” said Prerna Pruthi, another parent.

This is,however, the second time when the department has come up with a proposal of starting a bus service for government schools. Last year, schools were asked to provide similar data but the plan did not sail through.

“It was already mid-session when the department asked us to provide information. Most parents have already made conveyance arrangements by that time,” said a principal of a government school.
