A 31-year-old gym trainer was shot dead in the Shivjot Enclave area of Kharar on Friday night. Kharar police have registered a murder case and launched an investigation, but the culprits are yet to be arrested. An old enmity is suspected to be the reason behind the crime.

According to the police, the victim has been identified as Gurpreet Singh, alias Guri. He was a gym trainer and also a kabaddi player. Guri hailed from Rampura in Bathinda district and had been living in Kharar for the past seven to eight years.

The incident took place around 11 pm when Guri was outside a tea shop in Shivjot Enclave with some friends. The area also has an eatery and a salon near the crime scene.

Guri’s father, Baldev Singh, said he received a call around midnight on Saturday, informing him that his son had been shot and was admitted to a hospital. He, along with other family members, rushed to Kharar.

“My son was called to the spot and then shot dead. The killers also attacked his face multiple times with swords,” Baldev Singh said when asked if he recognised the assailants.

When questioned about any old enmity, Baldev Singh denied any major disputes. “Small incidents happened, but we were never aware of such a serious threat,” he said. However, he did not name anyone who could be involved in the murder.

He also accused the police of acting slowly, saying that despite claims by senior officials that the culprits had been identified through CCTV footage, no arrests had been made.

DSP (Kharar-1) Karan Sandhu said police received information about a quarrel in Shivjot Enclave and reached the spot, where they found that Guri had been shot.

“Guri succumbed to his injuries in the hospital. We have registered a murder case and will soon arrest all those involved,” DSP Sandhu said.
