Ajit Balaji Joshi, a 2003-batch Haryana cadre IAS officer, will be joining as the new UT Deputy Commissioner (DC), though with fewer powers than his predecessors enjoyed. Over the past few months, UT Adviser Vijay Dev has distributed some powers among the three city Sub-Divisional Magistrates (SDMs).
Joshi’s name was among the four recommended by the Haryana government in the first week of May. Joshi, who is currently posted as the DC in Jind, has been appointed as the Chandigarh DC on inter-cadre deputation, for three years.
For the past four months, UT cadre IAS officer S B Deepak Kumar had been holding the charge following the repatriation of Mohammad Shayin amid controversies.

The UT Vigilance Department had initiated an inquiry into the appointment of his former PA Poonam Malik as the Secretary of the Market Committee against rules. A PCS officer posted as SDM under Shayin had also accused the latter of mental harassment and given a complaint to the Adviser.
Further, BJP councillor Satinder Singh had filed a complaint of defamation against the DC in connection with a case of alleged land grabbing.
Also, a few days before Shayin’s repatriation, Secretary (Cooperative Societies) V Lalremathranga had sought his explanation for giving three extensions to an inspector of the Department of Cooperatives even though an FIR was registered against him.
Joshi has served in Panipat, Sonepat, Jhajjar, Hisar, Faridabad and Jind.
An electrical engineer from Mumbai’s Sardar Patel Engineering College, he has been imparting education to children of migrant workers.
He was also given the ‘Education for the underprivileged children, Distinguished Services Award’ in 2008. In several districts where he got to work, Joshi had developed a software to eliminate paperwork.
