The HC on Wednesday gave the Punjab government four weeks to take action,in accordance with law, against convicted police officers who have been released on probation. The directions were passed by a division bench headed by Justice M M Kumar during the resumed hearing of a PIL filed by advocate H C Arora. The petitioner pointed out that there are still some convicted police officers who have been retained in service on the ground that the court had released them on probation . The high court, while referring to a Supreme Court judgment, held that despite release on probation under the Probation of Offenders Act,the conviction remains intact and the competent authority can still take action based on such conviction.
