In the last five to six years,Kinnaur district has been a hotbed for hydro power projects and people’s movements against the environment degradation as an outcome of such projects. Of the 250-kilometre stretch of Sutlej flowing in the state,150 km is in Kinnaur,on which over 20 hydro projects will come up in future. The process can have a massive impact on the climate and vegetation, believe experts,as the river will not flow through its natural course but in tunnels.

Singh said issues such as dangers to environment conservation, livelihood, protection of forest and forest rights and displacement of people would be highlighted at the function on June 5. “From Kinnaur district alone, over 3,000 people are likely to attend the event,” said R S Negi of Him Lok Jagriti Manch. He said noted activists at the national level had also agreed to lend a voice to the cause.
