IGMC implants 5-yr-old with pacemaker

Doctors at the Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC),Shimla,made a major medical breakthrough on Thursday by successfully implanting a permanent pacemaker to save the life of a five-year-old child suffering from a cogenital heart block.

Doctors at the Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC),Shimla,made a major medical breakthrough on Thursday by successfully implanting a permanent pacemaker to save the life of a five-year-old child suffering from a cogenital heart block. The operation was a first of its kind done on such a young child at the institute.

Vanishka,who was admitted to the hospital’s cardiology OPD on Wednesday,was diagnosed with a complete heart block and had a history of falling unconscious. The child suffered a cardiac arrest while in the hospital. Doctors were able to revive Vanishka after which a decision was taken to put in a permanent pacemaker.

Dr Rajeev Bhardwaj,professor in Cardiology,said: “The child had a congenital complete heart block which occurs in one in 22,000 live births. The implanted pacemaker has a life of around 8-10 years after which it will need to be replaced.”

Vanshika,who hails from Ghatti village in Solan district is now recovering well.
