Babla bail plea dismissed
A local court,on Saturday,dismissed the bail application of Congress Municipal Councillor and former chairman of grain market committee Davinder Singh Babla,in a case of illegally providing job to an auction recorder. Babla has been lodged in the Burail Jail after he was booked in a case registered against him on January 4 on charges of cheating and criminal conspiracy,for providing the job to Rajesh Chauhan,on basis of fake documents. It was alleged that Babla used his influence to secure the job since he was the chairman of the market committee.

Two-day workshop on homeopathy held
A two-day workshop on homeopathy kicked off at Red Bishop on Saturday. The workshop which is being organised by the Department of Ayurveda,Yoga & Naturopathy,Unani,Siddha and Homoeopathy (AYUSH),saw doctors from the field discussing ways to promote this form of treatment. Geeta Bhukkal,state health minister was the chief guest on the occasion. Addressing the participants,Bhukkal said the usage of medicinal plants and herbs was very popular for curing various diseases in ancient time. “Our scriptures like Vedas too talk about the benefits of Ayurveda. However,with life becoming fast-paced,people want to be cured at an equally fast rate which explains popularity of allopathy,” she said.

Students visit Burail jail
The students of Centre for Police Administration under the University Institute for Emerging Areas in Social Sciences,Panjab University,were given practical exposure of correctional administration on Saturday hen they visited Model Jail in Chandigarh also known as Burail jail. Prof Anil Monga stated the purpose of this visit was to familiarise the students with the functioning of a jail. He emphasized that the visit is an endeavour of the Centre for Police Administration to supplement theoretical class room teaching with actual ground realities.

Tourism to be promoted in Ambala: Selja
Union Minister for Tourism and Poverty Alleviation Kumari Selja said that a number of tourism projects would be introduced in Ambala because of its wider scope. She said Panchkula and Yamunagar also had the potential to be developed into touruist destinations. She disclosed that she hoped that tourism would get incentive during the Commonwealth Games in October this year.

Selja was addressing a joint meeting of Haryana Chanmber of Commerce and Industry and Rotary Club in Ambala on Friday night. Responding to the demands raised by both the organizations,she said that indeed the twin cities of Ambala were facing manifold problems including that of poor shape of roads,shortage of power in industrial areas,extra VAT and excise duty on industry.

Usha Albuquerque holds career fest
Making a keynote presentation at the career fest today at Tagore Theatre,Usha Albuquerque,career counsellor and motivator,said apart from traditional courses such as engineering,medical and law,there were a large number of other options available to the youth for their career in the changing economic and global market scenario. She said that the service sector has emerged as the new engine of economic growth and employment generation with more than 65 per cent contribution to the country’s gross domestic product,adding that 200 million jobs were likely to be created in India by 2020 out of which 120 million jobs would alone be in the service sector,according to a report of the Planning Commission.

The careerfest was organized by ITFT Education Group under the aegis of the Chandigarh Administration evoked overwhelming response from more than 1000 students,parents principals and teachers with many of them having come from far off places in the neighbouring states of Punjab,Haryana and Himachal Pradesh to take advantage of the expertise and advice from Usha Albuquerque and her colleague Meenakshi Chug,psychologist.

Sector-21 RWA meeting held
The Residents Welfare Association,Sector 21,held their executive committee meeting under the presidentship of P C Sanghi at the Community Centre in Sector 21. The members felicitated Sanghi on his nomination as member of UT Administrator’s Advisory Council. Recounting Sanghi’s achievements general secretary of the association K C Jain said he had brought reforms in Sector 21 by taking a lead in shifting auto mechanics from the market,concretization of back service lanes,four laning of V4 road,development and beautification of green belts,etc.

Office-bearers elected at Chamber of Chandigarh Industries
Naveen Manglani has been unanimously elected the president of the Chamber of Chandigarh Industries (CCI). The 20th Annual General Body Meeting of CCI was held on Friday. The other office-bearers were also elected unanimously by the Executive Committee. Sandeep Sahni has been elected the vice-president,Inderjit Setia is the vice-president,Rajwant Singh the joint secretary and Rakesh Goel is the finance secretary.

Seminar on transfusion medicine held at GMCH
To apprise about the latest developments in transfusion medicine,a Continued Medical Education (CME) programme was held at the Government Medical College & Hospital,Sector 32,on Saturday. The CME was organised by the Department of Transfusion Medicine and Prof R C Sobti,Vice Chancellor,Panjab University Chandigarh inaugurated it.

Homoeopathy camp organised
A camp was organised by Dr Harsh Sharma at his clinic to mark the occasion of Dr Samuel Hahnemann’s birthday,founder of homoeopathy. The day is celebrated as World Homoeopathy Day all over the world. More than 50 patients were treated during the camp. ens

Doctor acquitted in attempt to rape case
Almost three years after being booked for attempt to rape,city-based doctor was acquitted by the lower court on Saturday,after the “victim” failed to appear in the court. A Sector-38 based medical practitioner,Dr B D Chug was arrested on charges of attempt to rape on a complaint lodged by his maid. The woman,in her early twenties,had alleged that she and 65-year-old Dr Chugh were alone at home when he tried to rape her. She used to live with her watchman husband on the top floor of the house at that time. Following she returned to Nepal and did not appear before the court to testify against the doctor. The court,thus,acquitted Dr Chug.

Lawyers end strike
The district court lawyers called off their hunger strike on Saturday after the Punjab Police suspended three of its erring police personnel posted at city police station,Kharar,for failing to undertake proper investigation in an accident which claimed the life of advocate Vijaypal Singh. The lawyers,were sitting in a hunger strike for the last two days,demanding action against all three police officers who had investigated the case. The lawyers ended the hunger strike after ASI Didar Singh,ASI Ramji Dass and ASI Narender Singh were suspended.

Fire razes six acres wheat crop
Standing wheat crop in six acres of land was destroyed in a fire in different places in Mohali district on Saturday. Fire tenders from here rushed the spots on getting the information and doused the flames before spreading to adjoining fields and averting major loss. While two farmers lost two acres each wheat crop in Abheypur village,two farmers in Madanheri and Deh Kalan villages suffered loss of one acre wheat crop each.
