Three held for honour killing
Three persons were arrested for their alleged involvement in the honour killing of Vikas,a resident of Panipat,whose mutilated body was found near a canal passing through Rohtak,on Monday. The accused were identified as the father of the girl with whom Vikas was in a relationship,Ravinder Gupta,her uncle Rajinder Gupta and cousin Shobi. The police said all three were produced before the court of Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate J B Gupta,from where they were sent to three-day police remand. Vikas,an engineer,disappeared mysteriously on March 20. A complaint of kidnapping was lodged with the Panipat police on March 23. His body was recovered from a canal in Rohtak on April 1. A few days ago,the girl wrote a letter to the Superintendent of Police (SP),Panipat,implicating her family members. Vikas father has already disclosed that the girls family were responsible for the murder,as he belonged to the Jat community.
Seven IAS officers transferred
The Punjab Government transferred seven IAS officers,including three deputy commissioners,on Monday. According to the orders issued by the Personnel department,Arunjit Singh Mighlani is the new Ropar deputy commissioner,Prithi Chand will take up the post of Gurdaspur deputy commissioner,Priyank Bharti has been transferred as Jalandhar DC,Ajit Singh Pannu is the Markfed Managing Director,KS Sra is Punjab Mandi Board Secretary,Dharam Dutt is transferred as Power Additional Secretary and Manisha Trighatia is the project director,National Rural Health Mission. PCS officer Bhupinder Mohan Singh has been made the Assistant Commissioner (General) Muktsar and he will also hold the charge of District Transport Officer,Muktsar.
SGPC issues notice to medical store
The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has issued a notice to Ludhiana-based Harpreet Singh,who runs a medical store at the Sri Guru Ram Dass Charitable Hospital at Valla. Singh has outlived the two-year contract for running the shop. The tenders were invited in 2006 and the medical store was allotted for two years,but the store owner has not removed the shop till now. Your contract period for the shop had ended on July 22,2008 but despite reminders,you have not vacated the premises, said the letter signed by Secretary Trusts,SGPC,Joginder Singh,adding that a weeks time is given to the alottee to vacate the space or face action.
Wheat procurement picks up,9.47 lakh MT procured in Punjab
After a slow start,wheat procurement has finally picked up in Punjab. Government agencies and private millers procured over 9.47 lakh metric tonnes (MT) of wheat till Monday evening. The procurement figures this time have surged past 8.57 lakh tonnes as on April 12 last year. Of the total procurement,9.45 lakh tonnes (99.8 per cent) have been procured by government agencies while private traders procured 1,638 tonnes (0.2 per cent). Patiala is leading with highest arrivals of which 4.14 lakh tonnes have been procured,followed by Sangrur where 1.83 lakh tonnes have been purchased. Procurement has also picked up pace at Ferozepur where 72,086 metric tonnes of wheat have been bought. As on Sunday,Punsup had procured the maximum (26 per cent) among procurement agencies followed by Markfed which has bought 1.92 lakh tonnes. Pungrain has procured 1.2 lakh tonnes,while Punjab State Warehousing Corporation (PSWC) picked up 1 lakh tonne and Punjab Agro Industries bought 1.4 lakh tonnes. The Food Corporation of India (FCI) has procured 1.3 lakh tonnes.
Makkar terms World Sikh Conference a total failure
Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) Chief Avtar Singh Makkar took strong exception to the stand taken by Sarna brothers against the Akal Takht on Monday. Terming the World Sikh Conference,which concluded in Delhi on Sunday,a “total failure”,Makkar said the host of the conference,Paramjit Singh Sarna,heading Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee,and his brother Harvinder Singh Sarna had committed an “irreligious act” by raising objections on various Hukamnamas (edict) issued by five Sikh high priests from Akal Takht. “They are directly challenging the authority of the Takht,which is the supreme seat of Sikhism. The people know their designs and will not forgive them,” he stated in a press statement.
