Sonam Kapoor believes Indians are at an advantage at Cannes because they can carry off both Indian and international looks

Even before she walks the red carpet for the first time at Cannes,actor-fashionista Sonam Kapoor is walking into fashion headlines. Ask her if she is following her dad’s footsteps to Hollywood and she retorts,“I have a long way to go for that.” She will be leaving for Cannes today, but the night shifts for her upcoming film Mausam, directed by Pankaj Kapur and co-starring Shahid Kapoor, haven’t given her time to prepare for the occasion.

“I have been so busy that my sister Rhea is readying my wardrobe. There are two Indian designers who are making Indian wear for me. But I will wear the one which I will be comfortable in,” she says, not revealing the names of the designers.

Her biggest red carpet moment came during the premiere of Delhi-6 when she wore an Anamika Khanna anarkali. “It was my first time outside home territory and I was complimented for my acting and my look,” she says. But she wants to outdo her previous best at Cannes.

Last year, there were rumours that Sonam was to walk the red carpet with Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan,but it resulted in a much-publicised ‘catfight’ and Sonam had to let go of the opportunity. But the two have made up since and will be seen at the French Riviera this year along with Freida Pinto — representing L’Oreal Paris. “I will be showcasing the Lor Lor Look — a sun-kissed make-up look on May 15,” says Sonam, excited about sharing the limelight with Bachchan,Gwen Stefani and Eva Longoria.

The pretty actress is also excited at the chance of catching a few movies. “I am looking forward to watching The Artist, directed by Michel Hazanavicius,” she says.

Over the years,Cannes has bestowed a lot of importance on Indian actors. But the fashion police haven’t been kind to Indian celebs, who have generally received a thumbs down for clumsy outfits. Sonam disagrees. “Indians have a very distinct style and nobody experiments the way we do. We are at an advantage because we can carry off both Indian as well as international styles,” says the actress, who is as comfortable in an Anamika Khanna lehenga as she is in Dior.

Right from the start of her career,Sonam’s fashion sensibilities have got more accolades than her acting abilities. But she diplomatically puts across her stand: “I have loads to do as an actor and I am no fashionista. I am a real girl, not skinny and hence can fit into most clothes,” says a confident Sonam, who lists Cate Blanchett and Diane Kruger as her favourite red carpet celebs. In the presence of all these fashionistas, how does Sonam plan to stand out? “I will be smiling a lot,” she says.
