Majority of Class X students still opt for board exam

In 2012,of the total 21,961 students,14,590 had opted for board exams. However,the year 2011 witnessed confusion over the two options.

The difference between the board and the internal examination is that a student who opts for board examination has to take the papers at the centre allocated by CBSE and his papers are evaluated by examiners outside his school while in internal system,a student appears for examination in his school and his papers are checked by his teachers only.

CBSE regional director R J Khanderao says,“CBSE has provided an option to students either to opt for board or internal examination. So it is the discretion of the students depending upon their choice. Opting for board does not mean burdening CBSE.”

CCE was introduced with an aim to make the teaching and learning process easy and to reduce examination- related pressure on the students. CCE was introduced for classes I to X. Under this system,instead of marks,grades are given to the students for their curricular and extra-curricular activities throughout the year.

Generally,parents want their children to opt for boards as they become serious in studies and can get an experience before appearing for Class XII board examination. “Children do not take internal examination seriously,so it is better if they opt for boards,” says Mohan Lal,whose son is a student of Class X.

Rakesh Sachdeva,principal of DAV Public School,Sector 15,says,“If CBSE has introduced CCE system then they should not give an option to the students to make a choice. Let one system prevail. If there is a mindset that board exams are tough and students take them seriously then this is a wrong mindset. The entire year,the same teachers teach the students. If they check their papers,what is the harm in that?”

However,president of Independent Schools Association (ISA) H S Mamik says the students who are studying in schools which do not have class X and XII are opting for boards more as they have to change the school for higher studies.
