‘Gagandeep was feeling ignored,so wanted to defect to Congress’

After defection of two key aides from the People’s Party of Punjab (PPP),at least its allies stay intact. Amid reports of Surjit Singh Barnala’s son Gagandeep Barnala wanting to defect to the Congress,Sanjha Morcha chairman Manpreet Badal met Barnala and his wife,Surjit Kaur — president of Shiromani Akali Dal (Longowal) — at their residence in Chandigarh on Tuesday evening.

“Gagandeep was feeling ignored by Manpreet and wanted to defect to the Congress. But Manpreet today resolved the differences with him and blamed Kushaldeep Dhillon (who on Sunday defected to the Congress) saying it was Kushaldeep who handled the affairs of the alliance,” SAD (Longowal) general secretary Baldev Mann said.

Gaganjit,a former MLA from Dhuri in Sangrur district, had approached the Congress but was told by state Congress in-charge Gulchain Singh Charak to merge along with his party.

He was interested in a ticket from Dhuri, which the Congress was not willing to concede. The SAD (Longowal) has demanded two seats from the Sanjha Morcha — Dhuri for Gagandeep and Sunam or Dirba for Baldev Mann.

PPP media in-charge Arunjot Sodhi said the meeting of Sanjha Morcha’s coordination committee will be held next week at the residence of Barnala to decide on candidates.
