Complainants say no objection to closure report filed by CBI
The infamous wireless scam in which the names of Punjabs top police officers had cropped up,seems to be heading for a burial as the complainants filed a no objection certificate to the closure report filed by CBI in the case today. The case is listed for hearing before CBI Special Judge Darshan Singh on February 25,when the fate of the case will be sealed.
Sources said while recording their statements in the court today, the complainants, advocate Ashok Chaudhary and R K Kwatra, members of social organisation Lawyers Initiative, said the PIL was based on media reports and they had no objection to the closure report filed by the investigating agency.
The multi-crore scam had made headlines in 2006,when the CBI registered a case against police officers, accusing them of embezzlement of crores of rupees over a period of three years (2000 to 2003) in connivance with wireless suppliers. The Punjab and Haryana High Court had handed over the case to the CBI on May 30,2006,directing it to probe the Rs 5.25-crore scam on a PIL filed by the two lawyers alleging largescale irregularities.
The CBI in the FIR had named the then DGP-cum-commandant (Punjab Homeguards) K K Attri,ADGP (Vigilance) Izhar Alam,IG (Crime) G D Pandey,DIG (Intelligence) R P Singh and SP (Lokpal) Malvinder Singh Sidhu besides former ADGP D R Bhatti, former ADGP S C Jain and IG R C Prasad. They were booked under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
