A former Punjab Congress chief, Navjot Singh Sidhu is a former three-time Lok Sabha MP from Amritsar, a one-time Rajya Sabha MP and a one-time MLA from Amritsar East. (File)“Shareer kahin bhi ho aatma yahi basti hai (My body may be anywhere, but soul is always here),” cricketer-commentator-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu said on Monday during the Indian Premier League (IPL) T20 Rajasthan Royals (RR) versus Mumbai Indians (MI) match when asked about his return as commentator.
The three-time Lok Sabha MP and one-time Rajya Sabha MP, Sidhu, (60) has made a comeback to cricket commentary after around a decade and at a time when the nation will go to Lok Sabha polls from April 19.
With final of this IPL season scheduled on May 26, senior Congress leader Sidhu, who has remained a star campaigner in politics will be missing from the political landscape, particularly in his home state which goes to polls on June 1. What remains unchanged is the aggression of Sidhu. After running parallel shows of strength in Punjab, out of the shadow of Punjab Congress, Sidhu as a commentator is back in the commentary groove fast, literally overshadowing the fellow commentators.
Long cricketing years up his sleeve, powerful oratory skills, his signature style one liners and his command over Hindi, Punjabi and English arm Sherry (as he is popularly called) with an unmatchable armoury while delivering punches and doing analysis in the commentary.
He has been chosen by Star Sports for Hindi commentary during the IPLT20 and on social media has both admirers and critics – former showering heaps of praises on him for returning to the field he belongs and latter even going on to say that they had switched over to English commentary channel to avoid the “repeated jokes and poetic verses”.
As MI’s bad run continues under Hardik Pandya’s captaincy with three losses in a row in the IPLT20, Sidhu has been all praise for former MI captain Rohit Sharma, but also underlines that it was franchisee’s decision to appoint Pandya as captain.
And as crowd booed Pandya Monday, Sidhu while discussing this with fellow commentators had a one liner to boost his morale, “Maine kaha baat sun oye, marey hue kutte ko koyee taang nahi maarta (loosely translated as people only pick faults with performers).” Sidhu’s return as commentator has been touted by Star Sports has “Sardar of commentary box is back”. During his cricketing career, he played 187 One Day International (ODI) matches, scoring 7,615 runs.
During RR versus MI match on Monday, Sidhu boasted of having a “memory of an elephant” as he recollected various incidents.
Sidhu is never short of funny incidents both on and off cricketing field during his career as cricketer, recalling how he and Mohammad Azharuddin saw a movie sitting on front row of the cinema hall, and how Mohinder Amarnath after getting bowled out in a match started to put back bails on stumps while saying jovially that he will bat again as crowd had come to watch him.
