The first meeting of the Partnership Initiative Programme in Solid Waste Management was held in the Municipal Corporation on Monday. The meet was attended by representatives of about 130 NGOs,resident welfare associations and various other organisations.
During the meeting,the participants gave their consent to Dr G Dewan,Medical Officer,Chandigarh Municipal Corporation,for helping the civic body in launching the public awareness campaign for sanitation and solid waste management.
According to sources,the participants will be organised in groups to carry out specific activities in accordance with the module prepared for each group. While each group will hold separate meetings to discuss their plan of action,a provision for quarterly meeting to monitor performance will also be made by the civic body.
Stressing on a long-term policy on garbage collection system,the participants said the residents should be sensitised for segregating wet food or biodegradable waste and dry recyclable waste separately and efforts should be made to stop them from littering the streets and burning garbage or dry leaves.
The participants also discussed the significance of sweeping the streets during night keeping in view the heavy movement of people during day time.
Application of ISO certifications in solid waste management was also discussed during the meeting.
