Nominated councillor alleges deliberately not invited to function

Nominated councillor Surinder Bahga has alleged that he was not invited for the foundation stone laying of the primary school at Sector 49 D.

Nominated councillor Surinder Bahga has alleged that he was not invited for the foundation stone laying of the primary school at Sector 49 D. The foundation stone was laid on Sunday by Mayor Raj Bala Malik. Bahga has alleged that this lack of invitation to him seemed to be a fallout of the fact that he has questioned the officials of the Engineering Wing on various occasions.

The primary school at Sector 49 is the first one that will be built by the Municipal Corporation after the primary schools were shifted under the purview of the civic body. Bahga had coordinated with the Architecture Department of the UT Administration to get the plans for the schools approved. These had been stuck in the pipeline for almost a year.

Bahga,who had been involved in several confrontations with the officials of the Engineering Wing,had been pointing out faults in the agenda items prepared by the officials. As a member of the roads committee he had,in one of the meetings,asked the officials to prepare the agenda items again owing to the discrepancies. Recently during a meeting of the general house where the officials staged a walkout,Bahga had expressed resentment at the functioning of the officials.

He said,“It is just before the function that I got to know that foundation stone of the school was being laid. I was not sent the invitation card that went to all councillors.”

An official of the MC said that invitation cards have been sent to everyone. A person went with the card to Surinder Bahga’s residence which was locked. The card was then put in the letter box.

The primary school will be constructed at the cost of Rs 3.23 crore in an area of 1.13 acre. The three storey building will be constructed in a period of 18 months. Mukesh Anand said that the ground floor will consist of six classrooms,a principal’s room and an office. As many as seven classrooms,staff room and laboratories will be constructed on the first floor and six classrooms and laboratory will be constructed on the second floor.
