Not enough boxes for UT beat cops

Over 300 policemen have been deployed to improve police-public liaison through the police beat system.

Over 300 policemen have been deployed to improve police-public liaison through the police beat system. However,in many sectors there are no beat boxes in sight.

“In all we have 46 beat boxes in the city. We had sent a proposal to the engineering department for constructing 12 new beat boxes in various sectors and renovate another 11. The work on beat boxes was to be completed by March this year. However, even after four months the engineering department is yet to begin its work,” said a police officer.

“The beat boxes are the smallest police units to handle grievances of a specific area. Though the policeman of beat system does not stay in the beat box for the entire day,he has to spend some time there to interact with people,” the police officer said.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP),Chandigarh Naunihal Singh said that they had written about the construction of beat boxes to the Chandigarh engineering department. “Despite our frequent requests, the beat boxes have not been installed,” he said.

The beat system was revived in the city in May this year and Chandigarh police boasts that the system is working exceptionally well, despite the infrastructural hiccups.
