This, the court emphasized, is crucial to restore people's faith in society and the right way of doing things.Making a scathing observation on corruption in the corridors of power, the CBI Court, led by Jagjit Singh, which sentenced the former Punjab Police DSP, Raka Ghhira to six years of imprisonment, said, “Bribes were once paid for getting wrong things done, but now they’re also paid for getting right things done at the right time.”
Regarding corruption among public servants, the court commented, “Corruption has always existed among public servants, changing in shape, dimensions, textures, and shades over time and place. It has seeped so deeply into society that people now believe they have to bribe officials for any work, even lawful ones. This has led individuals like the convict to take advantage of and misuse this prevailing notion.”
The court emphasized the need to break the nexus between individuals like the convict and those who aid them in improperly performing public duties.
This, the court emphasized, is crucial to restore people’s faith in society and the right way of doing things.
Former Punjab Police DSP, Raka Ghhira, has been sentenced to six years in prison and fined Rs 2 lakh by the special CBI Court in Chandigarh for a bribery case dating back to 2011. Ghhira was caught red-handed accepting a bribe of Rs 1 lakh from a builder, KK Malhotra, to settle his case. Despite Ghhira’s plea for leniency, citing age and a career fighting against the system, the court emphasized that her conduct as a senior police official misusing the system for personal gain warrants a deterrent punishment to discourage similar offences in society.
