Now shamed,did special task force ever bring glory to Haryana Police?

It appears that Haryana’s infamous Special Task Force (STF) doesn’t have any achievement to its credit,as per the records available with Haryana Police. The STF’s entire team,now disbanded,that was headed by Additional Superintendent of Police-level officer Ashok Sheoran,is presently cooling its heels in jail. The team was arrested for allegedly running an extortion racket in Panipat district of Haryana.

According to the information procured under RTI,by a Rohtak based RTI activist Pawan Bansal,Haryana Police has now replied that the STF was constituted on the instructions of the Director General of Police Ranjiv Dalal,but the State Public Information Officer-cum- Inspector General of Police,Personnel,Haryana has maintained silence on the query pertaining to achievements of the STF,if any.

In a three-page reply,in which Bansal has asked Haryana Police to provide replies to queries pertaining to STF’s constitution,appointment of officials,salaries drawn by the officers,functions and duties of STF,achievements,if any etc,Haryana Police has nowhere mentioned if STF had any achievements.

The reply further states that STF was constituted on the Haryana DGP’s orders dated October 6,2008 and it was supposed to report to the Additional Director General of Police,Haryana. The area of operation of STF was only confined to Hisar and Rohtak ranges with its headquarters in Hisar. “The primary objective of the team was to collect intelligence about wanted/ notorious criminals,proclaimed offenders and bail jumpers etc. and make sincere efforts to arrest them”,the reply states.

The reply adds that the Haryana government has chargesheeted ASP Ashok Sheoran on Feburary 15,2011 and asked him to submit his reply to the charges levelled against him. Sheoran and his seven team members have already been placed under suspension and lodged in jail. The reply also mentions that departmental inquiries have been initiated against all the members of STF,who were arrested for allegedly running extortion racket in Panipat district.
