Kulwinder Singh, who allegedly got a man murdered on February 5 and attempted to pass off the body as his own in order to “claim an insurance running into crores of rupees”,was on Thursday arrested from a gurdwara in Maharashtra, the Gurdaspur police said.

Italy-based NRI Kulwinder Singh, who allegedly got a man murdered on February 5 and attempted to pass off the body as his own in order to “claim an insurance running into crores of rupees”,was on Thursday arrested from a gurdwara in Maharashtra, the Gurdaspur police said.

Gurdaspur SSP Varinderpal Singh said a police team headed by Dhariwal SHO Tarsem Masih arrested Kulwinder from a gurdwara in the morning. The team was on its way back to Punjab with Kulwinder,he added.

Originally a resident of Sohal village in Gurdaspur district,Kulwinder reportedly called victim Kuljeet Singh — a resident of Mooliawal village in the same district — and “killed” him with the help of two accomplices,Jagir Singh and Sham Lal,who had earlier been arrested.

Kuljeet’s body of was put in a second-hand Maruti car, which the police said,Kulwinder had bought about three months ago for Rs 30,000. The accused then set the car on fire at GT Road near Sohal village. The victim’s father identified the body on the basis of a part of the foot and shoe that was not burnt.

Kulwinder — who the police claimed was also known as Kulwant alias Kanta in his village — had got the insurance cover just two days before coming to India. His wife, who is in Italy, was to get the insurance money after it was established that Kulwinder was dead, said police.

Victim Kuljeet’s father Wassan Singh,in his complaint to the police, had suspected a property dispute behind his son’s murder. The police will now inquire why Kulwinder chose Kuljeet as the victim, said the SSP.
