Nurse commits suicide in GMCH hostel room

A 26-year-old staff nurse at Government Medical College and Hospital in Sector 32 (GMCH-32) allegedly committed suicide by injecting herself with an unknown substance in her hostel room on Thursday morning.

A 26-year-old staff nurse at Government Medical College and Hospital in Sector 32 (GMCH-32) allegedly committed suicide by injecting herself with an unknown substance in her hostel room on Thursday morning. A suicide note was recovered from the victims room in which she accused her husband of cheating her and accused his brother-in-law of harassing her family,police sources said.

Rajbir Kaur had been working in the nursing ward of the GMCH-32 for the past five years. Her body was found lying on the floor after her room was forcibly opened,a police officer investigating the case said. As per the officer,Kaur had returned to her hostel room at around 8 am on Thursday after her night duty in the nursing ward. Kaurs elder sister who lives in the US called her at around 9.30 am,but when there was no response she called Kaurs friend to check if everything was alright. Her friend then went to her room and when there was no response despite repeated knocks she informed the hostel warden. The door was forcibly opened and Kaurs body was found lying on the floor following which the police were called, the officer said.

Kaur was rushed to the hospital where she was declared brought dead.

Preliminary investigation revealed that Kaur had married one Ranjeet Singh,who reportedly works as a property dealer in Batala near Gurdaspur,in July at the Punjab and Haryana High Court without informing her family, the officer said.

In her suicide note,Kaur wrote that a few days back,she came to know that Singh was already married with two children. Also,Singhs brother-in-law Amandeep made calls to her and her family in Gurdaspur warning them to stay away from Singh and it is likely due to this that she committed suicide, the officer added.

Police sources said that Kaur had spoken to her mother Parminder Kaur on Wednesday and told her about the marriage and how she had been cheated.

Kaurs mother had already left Gurdaspur early on Thursday morning and was on her way to meet her daughter when she was informed about her daughters death.

The police officer said,We still do not know what she injected into her body that caused her death and this will be clear only after we get the post-mortem report on Friday morning.

A case of abetment to suicide has been registered against Singh and Amandeep and further investigation is in progress.

Speaking to Newsline ,a relative of Kaur said,We had no clue about the marriage till two days back and we still do not know anything about Singh. When she informed her mother about the marriage,she did seem upset and also apologised but we did not know that she would take such an extreme step. Kaur is survived by her mother and five sisters,the officer said.
