More than 500 delegates have already registered and around 200 abstracts received from the various paper presenters for the first Law Congress on the theme,‘Law as a facilitator of socio-economic reforms in the present decade”,on Saturday and Sunday. The paper presenters include professors from various universities and a good number of senior advocates and judges of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

Addressing a press conference,Prof P S Jaswal,Chairman of the Department of Law,said,“The main thrust of the Law Congress will be on the impact of socio-economic legislation and judicial verdicts in the current decade of the present century. The Congress shall be held in nine sessions covering different aspects of socio-economic reforms that have taken place in the first decade of the 21st century.”

The Congress will delve into issues like laws relating to infrastructure,including education,good governance,including alternate dispute resolution and socio-economic consequences,intellectual property rights and boost to socio-economic developments,laws relating to weaker and marginalised segments and their socio-economic uplift and corporate laws and the socio-economic fallout.

In the wake of liberalisation,privatisation,globalisation,advanced information technology and consumerism,India has passed through a rapid social upheaval. As a result,multiple social tensions,coupled with new permutations and combinations,have generated in the social order. In order to obliterate such social tensions and economic competitive disparities,the legal system has become a vehicle of growth-oriented,progressive and reformative movement. Thus,the various legal luminaries and academia will participate in this Congress to examine and understand the role of law in this changing process. This is the first time that anywhere in India such kind of Law Congress is being organised.

On this special occasion,the batch of the 1985 law graduates of department are celebrating their silver jubilee year. To commemorate this,they have already presented their department two granite stones with engraving of law department on one and the lady of justice on the other.
