Panchkula pubs to only sell drinks with low alcohol

Pubs have been allowed in Panchkula in the new excise policy for 2011-12,but they will only be allowed to sell low alcohol beverages.

“They are successful in Chandigarh so they will be in Panchkula also,” said Madhu Bala,Deputy Excise and Taxation Commissioner,Panchkula. “Only low alcohol beverages like beer and wines will be allowed. The license fee has been fixed at Rs 4 lakh for an year.”

In Panchkula,‘Permit kaksh’ (drinking place) will be allowed on the borders. The district shares boundary with Punjab,Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh. In order to avoid smuggling and promote healthy drinking habits,the sale of beer shall be allowed at country liquor vends in rural areas where no Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) vend has been allotted.

The number of liquor vends has not been increased in the district. There will be 60 country liquor vends,with 26 in rural areas.

There will be 57 vends for IMFL,with 19 in rural areas.

Reservation has also been introduced for the first time in excise policy. Six vends have been reserved for Scheduled Castes and three for Backward Castes. This time,instead of auction,tendering has been introduced. The tenders will be opened on March 17. The highest reserved price for IMFL has been kept for vend in sector 10/11 market close to Anupam sweets at Rs 90,30,000,followed by Gandhi Chowk in Kalka at Rs 85,35,000.

The highest reserved price for countrymade liquor vend has been fixed at Rs 88 lakh for Barwala,which will cater to Bataur,Rehore,Sultanpur,Jalauli,Sunderpur Karni and Jeetpur,followed by vend in Raipur Rani at Rs 57,80,000.
