Long-term plan mooted to avert flood threats in Punjab’s Nawanshahr; V-shaped desilting of Sutlej river likely

The increase in volume and flow of water in the Sutlej after the recent opening of floodgates at Bhaklhra dam has heightened the apprehension of the district administration and the Mirzapur and Hussainpur villagers living near Dhussi bund. Now that the water level has decreased, the residents feel there is some respite to the danger of breach.

Deputy Commissioner Randhawa, accompanied by district administration and drainage department officials, has constantly been monitoring the situation, providing requisite administrative assistance and boosting the morale of the villagers.

“While handling the situation at Mirzapur and Hussainpur, it has been noticed that a forest area has been created by planting safeda trees at Mand Chaunta village in Ludhiana district lying on the other side of the Sutlej river. This is not only causing hindrance to the smooth flow of the river but also diverting the water towards Mirzapur village in Nawanshahr district causing huge erosion of Dhussi bund,” said the deputy commissioner.

The officer added that he had taken up the issue with the department concerned to take immediate steps to ensure the natural flow of river water there.

Besides, the officials are also exploring the potential of setting up mini hydel projects, he added.
