After the arrest of a senior medical officer of the Punjab government and a chemist of Fatehgarh Sahib in the PMET scam, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) has also arrested their sons.

Sarpurneet Singh, son of Surjit Singh,SMO of the Civil Hospital,Amloh in Fatehgarh Sahib and Ajay Kumar, son of chemist Ranjan Kumar, also from Fatehgarh Sahib, were arrested by the SIT for hiring imposters to sit in their place in the PMET held last year.

Sources said that while admissions of the two was cancelled and they have been blacklisted, the duo still managed to secure seats in a private medical college. Investigations revealed that imposters, who are medical students, had taken the PMET examination in their place last year after a hefty payment of Rs 5 lakh.

The SIT also hinted at the involvement of their parents, who paid up to Rs 20 lakh for the complete admission process through middlemen, who assured them a seat in a medical college in the state.

Sources said the SIT has also obtained arrest warrants against three more medicos, two from Delhi and one from Bihar, who not only posed as candidates in the 2008 examination, but acted as touts for arranging more imposters. One of the medicos flunked in his last year and his training period was thus extended.

The SIT points towards a well-oiled nexus between middlemen, aspirants and medics from across the country.

“Further investigations will reveal a lot in the coming days,” said SIT chief LK Yadav, who was appointed by the Punjab government to probe the scam following instructions from the Punjab and Haryana High Court, which had intervened in the matter in public interest.
