The online system of recording students attendance, initiated by Panjab University three years ago,has been enforced by the School of Communication Studies (SCS) from this semester.
The universitys administration had earlier proposed that the attendance of students should be recorded online so that it becomes easier to generate reports, especially during students elections and exams. According to PU rules,a student must have 75 percent attendance to be able to take the semester exams. According to the Lyngdoh Committee report, the same criteria is applicable for qualifying as a valid candidate for student council elections also.
The system has been enforced initially, just by the University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET) and Chemistry department. In this system, the daily attendance of students is saved online in the PU server by every teacher by logging in through their username. The records cannot be changed once entered and the students can also check their attendance online.
However, the system could not gain popularity and very few departments adopted it. The Dean of University Instructions,Bhupinder Brar, said,We tried to introduce it in all departments but were not successful. We sent circulars and even held workshops for teachers to emphasize how easy and efficient it would be,but very few departments took it up seriously.
As per Mohammed Khalid,PUTA President,It is a good initiative but the major flaw with the system is that very few teachers in the university are tech savvy. Many departments also do not have computers. The basic problems must be dealt with before any new system is initiated. He added that it also amounts to extra work for the teachers who have to mark attendance manually and then feed it in their computers.
Online attendance record helps disqualify election candidate
Online record of attendance has proved to be beneficial in the past. Renu Vig,chairperson of UIET said that last year, during the student elections, the attendance records of one of the candidates was declared sufficient. However, students from opposing parties had produced printouts of the online attendance records that said otherwise, which led to the cancellation of his candidature.
