Punjab Pradesh Mahila Congress president Malti Thapar is not a happy woman these days. Reason: Not a single candidate nominated by the Mahila Congress feature in the list of candidates announced by the party for the Assembly elections. “Some 453 women had applied for seats through the Mahila Congress. We had cleared the names of 35,and I was told that our national president Anita Verma cleared 15 candidates but not even a single name from our list has been chosen,” Thapar, who was seeking a ticket from Moga, said. She has been denied the ticket.

She added that the neglected candidates would not revolt against the party. “Basically women do not threaten to leave the party in case they are not given the party ticket. Our silence and loyalty is taken as a sign of weakness. But,we will not revolt,” she said.

The Congress has given tickets to 11 women candidates – a majority of whom are related to male Congress leaders.
