Rain keeps crowds off NZCC function

The four-day silver jubilee celebration of North Zone Cultural Centre which was thrown open to public today failed to attract masses due to bad weather.

The four-day silver jubilee celebration of North Zone Cultural Centre which was thrown open to public today failed to attract masses due to bad weather. The programme was inaugurated at Parade Ground by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Friday.

The organisers claimed to have received good response from people who took invitations cards for the inauguration day, they said the reason for poor attendance was the downpour.

It is not the first time that nature downplayed the smooth flow of event. Two days prior to inauguration, nine artists were hurt due to heavy thunderstorm, besides several pieces of their art work, stage,Prime Minister’s green room, mud walls, paintings, lights and illustrations getting damaged. The organisers had to renew the arrangements in a very short time. Over 1,800 artists from all over the country were brought in to perform at the event which is claimed to be a Rs 10-crore cultural extravaganza.

Residents rued traffic inconvenience caused in and around the city on arrival of VVIPs especially on the Zirakpur-Panchkula flyover where VVIPs were to pass after 7.30 pm. Many other interior roads around the Parade Ground (where the event was to be held) were closed, causing congestion in areas where traffic was diverted.
