Sudden rains accompanied by thundershowers lashed Shimla and most adjoining hills, including the state’s apple belt, while the higher reaches experienced fresh snowfall.

The weather department here has predicted more rain and snowfall over the weekend though the next three days are expected to be marked by a clear sky, barring the high hills.

Said director,Meteorological Centre Dr Manmohan Singh,“Due to fresh Western disturbance, there are fair chances of more rainfall and snowfall at some places from April 15”.

“The western disturbances —

storm systems originating from Caspian Sea and moving across the Afghanistan-Pakistan region — are likely to be active in the region. These are also hovering over Jammu and Kashmir,” Dr Singh said.

During the day,Shimla experienced moderate to heavy rains paralysing normal life. Other places like Narkanda,Dalhousie and Manali also witnessed rain.

As result of this tourists and locals were out with woolens again as temperature dipped considerable in Shimla.

Keylong in Lahaul and Spiti district was the coldest place with a low of 1.1 degrees Celsius. Shimla recorded the minimum temperature at 9.7 degrees and a maximum of at 18.7 degrees.

The real problem, however,is with the apple crop as the growers are unable to take-up farming operations like sprays and other works in the orchards due to rains and cloudy sky.
