Remembering Manjit

His art was awash with colours and allusions to folk art making Manjit Bawa among the most interesting artists of his generation even three years after his death. In March,the Chandigarh Lalit Kala Akademi is offering a chance to get to know the artist better,through an interaction titled,The Art and Life of Manjit Bawa with Bawas friend and art critic Ina Puri. The evening with also include the screening a National Award-winning documentary titled Meeting Manjit,directed by Buddhadeb Dasgupta.

The documentary takes the viewer through three parallel journeys among them the filmmakers own through the world of Bawa.

Puris journey passes through Bawas changing styles down the ages. Bawa,too,travels through his life,switching from the present to the past as he talks as if to himself. The documentary gives one a glimpse of Dalhousie,

where Bawa had a studio and painted extensively.

The film will be screened on March 2 at the Auditorium Government Museum & Art Gallery,Sector 10 C.

Evening with the Ustad

I grew up listening to khayals and gats and learned their melody and rhythm, says Ustad Saeed Zafar Khan as he tunes his sitar to play at the Triveni Sangeet Sabha this evening. Born into a family of classical musicians,Ustad Saeed has been surrounded by stalwarts of the Delhi gharana among them,his father,the eminent sitarist Ustad Zafar Ahmed Khan.

Saeeds style blends tantrakari (instrumental virtuosity) with flashes of Delhi gharana gayaki (vocalism). His performances are marked with poetic tunefulness,rhythmic patterns and raagdari (treatment of the raag),making each rendition,a treat for the senses. His concert is being brought to the city by the Department of Cultural Affairs,UT Administration,as part of the Triveni Sangeet Sabha. Saeed will be accompanied by his son Sohal Saeed Khan.
