Elegant showrooms and crater-filled roads: Commuters daily struggle at Madhya Marg

The roads around SCO numbers 59-60 and 61 in Sector 26, SCO number 2A in Sector 7, and SCO numbers 99-102 in Sector 8 are particularly bad and require immediate repairs.

The glittering facades of high-end showrooms on Madhya Marg in Chandigarh’s Sectors 26, 7, and 8 stand in stark contrast to the deplorable condition of the road behind the showrooms. Despite being a hotspot for shoppers and visitors, the infrastructure of this prominent stretch leaves much to be desired. Uneven surfaces, potholes, and poor road maintenance have turned a once-bustling thoroughfare into a source of discomfort for commuters.

The roads around SCO numbers 59-60 and 61 in Sector 26, SCO number 2A in Sector 7, and SCO numbers 99-102 in Sector 8 are particularly bad and require immediate repairs. Similarly, the road just outside the gates of Government Model School in Sector 7 is in terrible condition, causing daily inconvenience to students and visitors.

The parking lots near these areas often witness a steady stream of vehicles. A parking lot worker in Sector 26 revealed that the average footfall of cars is around 200-300 daily, surging significantly on weekends and festive occasions. He emphasised that the authorities should prioritise the repair and upkeep of these roads, considering the area’s high traffic and economic significance.

Deep cracks, waterlogging during rains, and haphazard patchwork repairs make navigation a challenge. “You come here expecting a premium experience, but the deplorable roads transform it into a nightmare,” said Geetansh Sharma, a regular visitor to the area. Another shopper, Bhavyansh Goran, recounted a harrowing experience, stating, “we were unaware of the road conditions, and suddenly our car jolted violently into a deep, crater-like pothole. We almost lost control of the vehicle.”

The irony is striking — while the showrooms project an image of sophistication and affluence, the dismal state of the roads dampens the overall experience. The poor condition of the roads also poses a serious safety risk, with vehicles encountering sudden jolts and pedestrians facing difficulties, especially during the monsoon season when water-filled potholes become invisible traps.

Frequent visitors have voiced their dissatisfaction with the lack of action from authorities, pointing out that repeated complaints have yielded no concrete plan for improvement. Regular inspections and timely repairs are essential to address these issues. Neglecting the infrastructure of this economically significant area could have long-term repercussions on the city’s reputation. For a city that prides itself on planning and aesthetics, prompt action is critical to restoring its charm and functionality.
