Satnam Sagar (R) and his wife Sharanjit ShammiSatnam Sagar and his wife Sharanjit Shammi, hailing from Gandivind village of Amritsar, have become a social media sensation over the past week. The singing duo’s duet “Sagar di Vohti lendi Indica chala” from 2005 has gone viral recently.
Reflecting on the sudden surge in popularity, Sagar remarked, “The song had received a good response even back then, but in today’s age of social media, it’s breaking the internet like wildfire.”
Notable figures such as Bollywood actor Diljit Dosanjh, comedian Bharti Singh, Punjabi singers Nimrat Khaira and Mankeerat Aulakh, along with numerous social media influencers, have created reels featuring the song. One of the popular lines sung by Shammi goes, “‘Sagar di Vohti lendi Indica chala, immediately hai koi meri majboori mainu chheti de drivery sikha’ (Sagar’s wife can drive Indica, I have an urgency, so make me learn how to drive the car immediately).”
Reminiscing about the past, Sagar shared, “Decades ago, my friends used to mock me for writing and composing songs, but my albums still managed to do well. Albums like ‘Phulan Wali Rajai’ and ‘Chhindo di Hatti’ were particularly popular.” He further noted the evolution from audio cassettes to reels and now internet reels, admitting that while they aren’t particularly tech-savvy, they’re grateful for the love their song is receiving.
The song’s popularity transcends borders, with Punjabis and Canadians seen grooving to it in Ontario in another Facebook reel.
“I was a star in the past, and I continue to be one now,” Sagar proudly stated.
It’s worth mentioning that in 2016, the couple faced allegations of duping ex-serviceman and singer Harbir Singh. He accused them of charging him money to release his song album, which allegedly never materialized.
In 2020, the couple joined the BJP in Chandigarh, with their membership being formalized in the presence of the then state president Ashwani Sharma.
